B. Berry Strategies for Motivating Students

I teach a special needs preschool class.  The student’s ages range from three years old to five years eight months old. There are a variety of disabilities included in my class.  Most of the students are developmentally delayed. Developmentally they are egocentric and just beginning to find out about the world outside of their family life.  These students are learning:  how to separate from their parents, beginning social skills, and how to work with other adults.  When teaching preschoolers I rely on picture books with five or less sentences on each page.  This age of student is fairly easy to please with regard to the books read to them and there is a great variety of appropriate books available to read to them. When planning a lesson plan or unit plan I make sure to provide hands-on activities, the students enjoy working on different projects. Books written with rhythm, rhyme and repetition are the most motivational books for this age student.
