Strategies for Motivating Students- Cooper

I teach High/Middle School Band. I try to motivate students to read by giving them music-related selections and articles to read and by allowing them time for silent sustained reading. I use the music-related reading selections to help the students to better understand the elements of music that are being taught to and interpreted by them in their instrumental band class.

  1. I never thought about using reading in band! I would think you would need to read music obviously, but using music related articles to enhance their reading skills in a special area class is a great idea. I would think you could do the same in PE, art, etc. My school has very few special areas, but I am still going to bring this up at our beginning of 2013 meeting. I think it could really help, especially with the emphasis that is being placed on reading comprehension in non-fiction areas!
